英文新闻要求记者和编辑在报道新闻事件里必须客观地报道事件，如事件发生的时间、地点、人物、缘由以及经过。这些新闻报道的元素都必须要经过严肃的核实。
记者除了会引用官方人士的话之外，还会采访当事人和目击者。为了获取更多的内容，他们千方百计地找各种消息源，了解事件的人士，甚至一直了解内幕的人。不过，在新闻报道中，出于一些人身安全原因的考虑，曝料人不愿自己的姓名公开，或是应受采访者没有获得官方授权的要求，不能公布采访人的姓名。在这些情况下，记者会以不具名的方式在报道中指出内容的提供者。虽然不具名的方式在某种程度上会伤害新闻的真实性和可信度，但由于他们提供的内容与信息对于新闻事件的发展或报道有重要的作用，因此，新闻机构会在保证新闻报道整体客观实际的基本上予以引用。新闻报道通常不会直接写出这些不具名人的原话，而是以第三人称的间接引语的方式报道。
